R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks the sesquicentennial of the founding of San Saba County, and citizens gathered on February 1 to celebrate this notable anniversary and to witness the dedication of a Texas Historical Marker at the San Saba County Courthouse; and WHEREAS, San Saba County was officially created by an act of the 6th Texas Legislature on February 1, 1856, and the present site of the town of San Saba was designated as the county seat later that same year; named for the San Saba River, which flows through the region, the county was inhabited by the Tonkawa, Apache, Caddo, and Comanche tribes at various times in its history; the first European exploration of the area occurred in 1732 with an expedition led by the Spanish governor of Texas, Juan Antonio Bustillo y Ceballos; and WHEREAS, In the late 1800s, pecans, found in abundance along the San Saba River, emerged as an important local resource when English immigrant Edmund E. Reisen succeeded in making improvements to the native crop; in addition to agribusiness, other important industries in the county include stone quarrying and tourism; and WHEREAS, The citizens of San Saba County continue to play an integral role in preserving their rich heritage while preparing for a prosperous future, and it is indeed fitting to recognize this important milestone in the history of the region they call home; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the sesquicentennial of San Saba County.
