H.R. No. 515



R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola is 
celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2006 with the dedication of a 
Texas Historical Marker; and
	WHEREAS, One of the oldest churches in Wood County, Saint 
Paul was organized in 1871 by the Reverend John Branham with six 
charter members; the congregation met in a church at the corner of 
Harris and Stone Streets until 1897, when members built a new 
sanctuary at Front and Stone Streets, where their present church is 
located; a fellowship hall was added in 1993; and
	WHEREAS, Over the years, a number of dedicated pastors and 
associate pastors have led Saint Paul; this outstanding group of 
clergymen has included two moderators, several trustees of Butler 
College in Tyler, and a president of the District Convention; and
	WHEREAS, Saint Paul has counted among its parishioners Willie 
Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco and speaker of the 
California Assembly, who belonged to the church as a youth; and
	WHEREAS, This dynamic congregation supports a health 
ministry, general missionary society, drill team, benevolent 
committee, and five choirs, in addition to other activities and 
auxiliaries; and
	WHEREAS, Throughout the history of this venerable church, 
succeeding generations have continued to honor and build on the 
contributions of members who have gone before; sustained by a 
common purpose, warm fellowship, and inspired teaching, the 
congregants of Saint Paul have remained steadfast in their care for 
one another and their ministry to the world around them, and it is a 
pleasure to recognize the enduring devotion of this community of 
faith; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas 
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Saint Paul Missionary 
Baptist Church on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of its 
founding and commemorate Saint Paul's dedication of a Texas 
Historical Marker; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church as an expression 
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
