H.R. No. 593


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The naming of the Harry S. Brown Middle School in the El Paso Independent School District is a fitting tribute to Hut Brown, who has benefited the district as an educator, administrator, and volunteer for more than 50 years; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Texas Christian University and The University of Texas at El Paso, Mr. Brown joined EPISD in 1952 as a teacher and coach at El Paso High; through the years, he distinguished himself as assistant principal of Bassett Middle School and assistant principal and then principal of Andress High School; in 1981, he was appointed associate superintendent of the Northeast Area of EPISD, and he served in that position for nearly a decade; since his retirement in 1990, Mr. Brown has continued to volunteer and tutor with EPISD at Beall Elementary; and WHEREAS, In addition to working in education, Mr. Brown has made invaluable contributions to the vitality of his community and state through a host of other worthy endeavors; a member of the Texas National Guard for 14 years and a certified master peace officer, he served as a reserve deputy for the El Paso County Sheriff's Department for more than four decades, including 30 years as commander of the reserve force; he has also lent his time and talents as director of the Southwest International Livestock Show and Rodeo, El Paso Crime Stoppers, and the El Paso County Historical Commission; named the Texas Administrator of the Year by Texas School Librarians, he has chaired a scholarship committee and been inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, With construction of the new school, which is scheduled to open in February 2007 to some 1,200 students, the El Paso ISD has ensured a lasting tribute to this esteemed educator, who has had such a profound impact on so many residents of El Paso over the past half-century; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Hut Brown on the naming of the Harry S. Brown Middle School in his honor and commend him on his years of dedicated service to the El Paso Independent School District; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Brown as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
