R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Numerous Austin-area amateur radio operators are taking part in Field Day in June 2006, with several radio clubs meeting at Anderson High School to join in the 24-hour national event; and WHEREAS, Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, Field Day was created to test operators' skills in setting up and operating radio communication equipment in situations where electrical power is limited or unavailable; and WHEREAS, The first Field Day exercise took place in 1933, and this year's event is expected to include more than 30,000 ham radio operators in the United States and neighboring Canada; nationally, nearly 700,000 Americans are licensed amateur radio operators, while global participation in the hobby exceeds 2.5 million people; and WHEREAS, The importance of amateur radio is most notable in times of emergency, such as natural and man-made disasters, and the operators in the Austin area are doing their part to stay prepared for these dangerous situations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate Field Day on June 24-25, 2006, and recognize Austin's amateur radio operators for their participation in this noteworthy event.
