R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The "Movin' Mavs" of The University of Texas at
Arlington won the 2006 National Intercollegiate Wheelchair
Basketball Tournament; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable victory has brought the school its
seventh national championship, securing its reputation as one of
the powerhouses in the sport; and
WHEREAS, The team seized the 2006 title in a dramatic
conclusion that will long be remembered by its fans; with just 10.8
seconds remaining and the score tied at 51, the Mavs' Michael Paye
brought the ball up court, then passed to David Gonzales, who spun
and fired a stunning shot that dropped through the net as the final
buzzer sounded; and
WHEREAS, The outstanding play of Gonzales, Paye, and the
other members of The University of Texas at Arlington team was
overseen by head coach Jim Hayes, who has been at the helm for all
seven of the school's titles; under his direction, the Movin' Mavs
have become the only team in the country where each player is on
full athletic scholarship, an achievement that lends vital support
to these fine athletes; and
WHEREAS, The Movin' Mavs' success on the court is emblematic
of a deeper victory that has been achieved at The University of
Texas at Arlington; since the 1980s, the school has made a concerted
effort to be one of the most handicapped-accessible colleges in the
country, and its success in this regard has attracted many talented
students with disabilities to the campus who are looking for a
welcoming place to complete their studies; and
WHEREAS, Winning a national collegiate title is an
accomplishment that requires tremendous perseverance, outstanding
skill, and precise teamwork, and this latest championship garnered
by the Movin' Mavs serves as yet another proud moment for the
school's students and faculty; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Coach Jim
Hayes and the Movin' Mavs of The University of Texas at Arlington on
winning the 2006 National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball
Tournament and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued
success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team and Coach Hayes as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
