R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Rodolfo R. Flores of Uvalde is retiring from the board of trustees of Southwest Texas Junior College after more than three decades of distinguished service, including 14 years as board president; and WHEREAS, A native of Uvalde, Mr. Flores was raised in a hardworking family and spent many summers as a young man traveling great distances with his father to work on a sheep-shearing crew; despite juggling part-time jobs with other responsibilities, he was an excellent student and participated in numerous organizations, becoming a charter member of his school's National Honor Society; he graduated from Uvalde High School in 1948 at the age of 16 and went on to attend SWTJC, where he continued to excel in his studies while earning his associate's degree; and WHEREAS, With only two years of college but a tireless work ethic and strong will to succeed, Mr. Flores was accepted into law school at St. Mary's University, from which he graduated in 1953; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan returned to his hometown, and he was soon elected president of the Uvalde County Bar Association; in the years since, in addition to enjoying a successful private practice, having a career with First State Bank of Uvalde, and serving as city attorney, he has shared his time and talent with a host of diverse groups, from the Community Council of Southwest Texas and the Rotary Club to the National Hispanic Institute and the United Fund; a participant in the Uvalde Pro-Educational Organization and Uvalde PTA, he has also been committed to giving back to the school where he embarked on his higher education, and he was elected to serve on the board of trustees of SWTJC in 1975; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Flores has been justly recognized for his many good works with a number of accolades; these have included the American Legion Citizenship Award, designation as an Outstanding Phi Theta Kappa Alumni, and the Juarez-Lincoln Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Service, given by the City of Houston; in addition, he has been recognized by the State Bar of Texas for more than 50 years of service; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Flores has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Dolores, his son, Rudy Flores, Jr., and his wife, Diana, and his grandchildren, Rudy Flores III and Monica; and WHEREAS, Rodolfo Flores has long served the students of SWTJC and the community of Uvalde with integrity and dedication, and it is a pleasure to recognize him for his many notable efforts in behalf of his fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Rodolfo R. Flores for his remarkable tenure as president and member of the board of trustees of Southwest Texas Junior College and extend to him deep appreciation for his exemplary public service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Flores as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
