H.R. No. 619
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Edinburg school district has recognized Stephen
F. Austin Elementary School teacher Minerva Gomez for 45 years of
outstanding service in the education profession; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Rio Grande City, Ms. Gomez
graduated from Edinburg High School in 1957 and earned her bachelor
of arts degree in physical education with a minor in social studies
from Pan American College in 1963; and
WHEREAS, She has taught at Stephen F. Austin Elementary
throughout her career and also has taught English as a second
language to adults in the community; she even would continue free
classes in her home after the regular ESL classes ended for the
term; and
WHEREAS, An engaging teacher with a big heart, Ms. Gomez
created a project to teach her students to be good citizens by
volunteering 15 minutes of their lunchtime to help at the Amigos del
Valle Senior Citizens Center; she also organized the annual Jump
Rope for Heart Event, in which she and her students have raised
thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Gomez, who is a proud advocate of her Hispanic
heritage and culture, has for several years coordinated the annual
Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebrations at the Plaza Hidalgo Square;
her students sing the Mexican National Anthem and recite poems in
Spanish; and
WHEREAS, Active in her community, Ms. Gomez belongs to the
Edinburg Library Board, serves as co-chair of the Edinburg
Environmental Committee, and works on the school district recycling
committee; she also is a member of the Edinburg 2020 Education
Committee and the Cultural Activities Committee, participated in
the St. Jude's Math Marathon, and raised hundreds of dollars for St.
Jude's Children's Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Ms. Gomez has received numerous
deserving accolades; she was chosen as the 1995 Woman of the Year by
the Edinburg community, and November 10, 1995, was proclaimed
Minerva Gomez Day by the city; in addition, in 1996, the Edinburg
Housing Authority named a learning center in her honor, and she was
designated as a Notable Valley Hispanic in 1997; and
WHEREAS, In reflecting on the past 45 years, Ms. Gomez may
recall with great pride the countless young people she has helped to
set on paths to bright and rewarding futures, and it is indeed
appropriate to commend her; and
WHEREAS, Representative Aaron Pena has justly recognized
Minerva Gomez by authoring this resolution in her behalf during the
79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Minerva Gomez for 45
years in the teaching profession and extend to her best wishes for
the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Gomez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
