R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On June 18, 2006, the composer of "When I'm Sixty-Four" will celebrate his 64th birthday, and it is fitting at this time to pay tribute to Sir Paul McCartney, considered by many to be the single most successful and influential musician in the history of pop music; and WHEREAS, Born James Paul McCartney in Liverpool, England, in 1942, Sir Paul is well known to the world as a member of the Beatles, whose thrilling and distinctive approach to rock and roll has shaped the course of popular culture since they burst onto the music scene; and WHEREAS, The group's enduring appeal may be gauged by the fact that with the release of the Anthology series of 1995 and 1996, the Beatles scored three number-one albums in the United States in one year, a feat that had last been achieved three decades earlier--by the Beatles; and WHEREAS, Having set new standards of excellence and originality with his songwriting for the Beatles, Mr. McCartney went on to further artistic and commercial triumphs as a solo artist and with his own band, Wings; securing his position as the most successful popular-music composer of all time, he was voted the Composer of the Millennium in a poll conducted by the British Broadcasting Corporation, and his 1965 hit "Yesterday" is widely acknowledged as the most recorded song in music history; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCartney's unrivaled gifts as a musician and composer are well matched by his great generosity of spirit and dedication to the greater good; knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996 for his many achievements, he has lent his time and talent to such worthwhile endeavors as Live Aid, the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, the Rye Memorial Health Center in Sussex, Adopt a Landmine United Kingdom, Recording Artists Against Drunk Driving, and an all-star concert he staged in the wake of the attacks of 9/11 to honor New York City firefighters, police officers, and emergency workers, which raised tens of millions of dollars for the victims' families; and WHEREAS, On the long and winding road to his 64th birthday, Sir Paul McCartney has earned our admiration and respect as one of the world's singular musical talents and as a thoughtful and engaged citizen of the world; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Sir Paul McCartney when he's 64 and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. McCartney as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
