R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, April 5, 2006, marked the 90th birthday of Herb Cerwinske of Houston, and with nine decades of joyful times and meaningful accomplishments on which to reflect, he truly has reason to celebrate; and WHEREAS, Born on a farm in Iowa in 1916, Mr. Cerwinske earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Buena Vista College in 1937; a year later, he married Alceste Larsen, and the couple soon thereafter moved to New Jersey, where Mr. Cerwinske became an actuarial student at Prudential Insurance Company of America; his Texas roots took hold in 1952 when he accepted a transfer to Houston to help establish Prudential's new southwestern home office; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cerwinske embraced his new home in the Bayou City, cofounding the Country Playhouse, a community theater, where, many years later, the main stage would be named in honor of him and his wife; after 38 years of employment with Prudential, he retired as director of group insurance for the southwestern office in 1978; and WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Mr. Cerwinske helped develop the Harris County Senior Softball League, for which he played pitcher; he went on to share his time and talent as a math tutor for Houston public schools and to log more than 5,000 hours of volunteer service at Memorial Hermann Hospital; an avid bridge player, he has given many lessons on the game at local community centers and is an active member of Fairhaven Methodist Church; and WHEREAS, This devoted family man enjoyed 65 years of a loving marriage until his wife's passing in 2003, and the couple raised three daughters, Marinel, Jeri, and Teri; and WHEREAS, The birthday of Herb Cerwinske provides a fitting opportunity to honor this esteemed gentleman, who continues to contribute to his community and brighten the lives of all who know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby warmly congratulate Herb Cerwinske on his 90th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cerwinske as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
