H.R. No. 670


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 85th birthday of an esteemed Texan is always cause for celebration, and on April 7, 2006, Donald Dargen of Houston marked this joyous occasion; and WHEREAS, Born in 1921 to Ada Glassbrook and William Francis Dargen, Mr. Dargen grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and attended the University of South Dakota before leaving school to serve his country as an aerial gunner with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II; while stationed in Andover, he met and fell in love with Mary Grace Lyons; the pair were wed on April 15, 1944, and enjoy a union that has been blessed with 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Dargen reenrolled at the University of South Dakota, where he earned a degree in engineering and was a member of Sigma Phi Sigma and the National Physics Society; his long and distinguished career began shortly after he went to work as a draftsman for the New York Central Railroad; in 1951 he joined Texaco, and for the next 35 years served the company on assignments abroad and in this country; and WHEREAS, Mr. Dargen retired in 1986 in Houston and gives generously of his time and talents by volunteering for St. Jerome's food pantry, the PBS station, a crisis hotline, Houston Grand Opera Guild, and the Better Business Bureau; moreover, he is an avid bowler and bridge player and remains passionate about traveling, having journeyed on the Orient Express, seen the pyramids of Egypt, ridden on camels and elephants, and cruised both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; and WHEREAS, Donald Dargen sets a splendid example of how to live life to its fullest, and he is most deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Donald Dargen on his 85th birthday and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Dargen as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
