R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Denver Harbor Senior Citizens, Inc., is celebrating
a joyous milestone on May 19, 2006, when it commemorates 25 years of
service to the people of Houston's inner east side; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, this outstanding nonprofit has
fulfilled its original purpose of enhancing the quality of life for
older residents through the provision of nutritious meals, served
at the Denver Harbor Senior Citizens Center at 6402 Market Street;
and
WHEREAS, With the expansion of its programming, "El Centro
Alegre," or "The Happy Center," as it has been fondly nicknamed by
seniors, now also serves as a place to meet friends for a game of
dominoes, work on arts and crafts projects, enjoy monthly birthday
celebrations, and make a reservation for an out-of-town trip;
additional needs are met through telephone calls and home visits to
the ill, information and referral services, weekly exercise
programs, and biannual health screenings, while transportation to
and from the center is available to those living within a certain
distance; and
WHEREAS, Today, the center is ably guided by Richard
Caldwell, executive director, with the support of Carmen Garza,
assistant director, Rose Martinez, caseworker, and Elma Navarez,
administrative aide; and
WHEREAS, Providing oversight is the board of directors, led
by president Gloria Ayala, first vice president Jesse Castaneda,
second vice president Carolyn Lopez, secretary Virginia
Villarreal, and treasurer Roy Zermeno; also sharing their time and
expertise as board members are Moses Becerra, Rosemary Salazar, Joe
M. Padilla, Graci Garces, Carolyn Ramirez, Elizabeth Jimenez, Eric
Zuniga, Daniel Montez, Mary Ann Carrion, Judy Vacanti, and Theresa
Z. Padilla; and
WHEREAS, The Denver Harbor Senior Citizens Center opened in
1981, with Tlazalteotlzin Nelson as executive director; serving on
the initial board were Judge Richard Vara, president, Tony Valdez,
first vice president, Judy Martin Vacanti, treasurer, and Theresa
Padilla, secretary, along with Edwardo Lopez, Albert Luna, Luis
Mier, Joe Padilla, Joan Powell, Roger Pena, and Flora Suarez; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the dedication of other area
citizens has allowed this much-needed organization to continue to
brighten the lives of countless seniors; those who have also
contributed to the center's success include past executive director
Martha Gonzales Flores and past board members Yolanda Aguilar,
Ernest Arrendando, Iren Briones, Maria Flores, George Garcia,
Delores Hernandez, Bertha Martinez, Frank Martinez, Rose Moreno,
Richard Olivares, Jesus Padilla, Starla Reicek, Greg T. Reyes,
Alfreida Rocha, Maria Santillan, Richard Torres, and Gerard Torres;
and
WHEREAS, For a quarter-century, Denver Harbor Senior
Citizens, Inc., has promoted health, friendship, and safety for
senior Texans, and it is a pleasure to commend its staff, board, and
volunteers on a job well done; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate all those
associated with Denver Harbor Senior Citizens, Inc., on the 25th
anniversary of its founding and extend to them sincere best wishes
for a memorable observance; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
