R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of William Max Hale of Austin on March 17, 2006, at the age of 70, the Lone Star State has lost an eloquent enemy of injustice in its many forms, and we join his family, friends, and many admirers in mourning his loss; and WHEREAS, Originally from the Texas Panhandle, Mr. Hale was deeply involved with the civil rights movement of the 1960s, working at the Mobilization for Youth program in New York and marching in the southern U.S. with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and WHEREAS, His love of justice joined with the love of his home state in his work as the head of the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission and in his essential contributions to the passage of the Texas Fair Housing Act and the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hale was a fitting choice to serve as the first executive director of the Texas Human Rights Commission, a post he held for 17 years, and he brought to this demanding and worthwhile work his characteristic energy and intelligence; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to the cause that shaped the course of his life, he also served as chair of the Austin Human Rights Commission and as president of the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies; and WHEREAS, Though at the center of public events for many years, Mr. Hale was also a devoted family man, and his public persona as a relentless seeker of justice is complemented by his loved ones' view of him as a caring husband, father, and grandfather; and WHEREAS, Those individuals who seek to change society for the better are truly deserving of our sincere admiration, and Bill Hale's steadfast insistence that the highest ideals of our nation are not only possible but necessary helped to ensure a better and brighter world for every succeeding generation of Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of William Max Hale and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Karen; to his children, Mathis Hale and Lisa Coody; to his grandchildren, Britton, Paige, and Jace; to his daughter-in-law, Donna, and his son-in-law, Jesse; to his sister and two brothers; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William Max Hale.
