R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks the 20th anniversary of the
Veterans Band of Corpus Christi, providing an ideal opportunity to
recognize this notable group; and
WHEREAS, Organized in 1986 by Ram Chavez, a Vietnam veteran
and band director in the Corpus Christi Independent School
District, the group started with 23 members who shared Mr. Chavez's
determination to add to the solemnity and majesty of patriotic
events by providing live music; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the members of the band have
performed at an array of official functions, including the American
Bicentennial Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., a
welcome home celebration for troops of Desert Storm, and the
Inaugural Parade of Texas Governor Ann Richards; moreover, their
skill and dedication have earned them a host of accolades and the
distinction of being Corpus Christi's official city band; and
WHEREAS, Today, the ensemble features a diverse group of
musicians whose service records range from World War II to active
duty; the current roster also includes eight Purple Heart
recipients and represents all the major branches of the U.S.
military; and
WHEREAS, Our state and nation are profoundly indebted to
those brave individuals who make personal sacrifices for the
defense of our nation, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor this
fine group of veterans, not only for their years of military
service, but also for their continued patriotism and civic
contributions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Ram Chavez and
the current and former members of the Veterans Band of Corpus
Christi on the band's 20th anniversary and extend to them best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Veterans Band as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
