R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family, friends, and Austin-area residents are deeply saddened by the death of restaurateur and community leader Bruce Derden Walcutt, who passed away on May 6, 2006, at the age of 58; and WHEREAS, Born on September 26, 1947, on a farm outside Grapevine, Bruce Walcutt moved with his family to Austin in 1955; he graduated from Austin High School, where he met his future wife, Mary Holt, and then earned a bachelor's in business administration from The University of Texas at El Paso; after an honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, he returned to Austin to enter the restaurant business; and WHEREAS, Mr. Walcutt cofounded Pelican's Wharf in 1972, and a few years later he and some friends opened the County Line, a barbecue restaurant that has since become an Austin institution, as well as a success in 10 other cities; known for his willingness to do everything from wait tables to slice brisket, he sincerely cared for his staff, many of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years; and WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to Austin, this esteemed Texan shared his time and talents with many local organizations; he served as president of the Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America, the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Westlake Community Library, and the Headliners Club; moreover, he served on the boards of Big Brothers-Big Sisters, the Austin Heritage Society, the Austin Restaurant Association, Ballet Austin, and Philmont Scout Ranch; and WHEREAS, Having been a Boy Scout himself, Mr. Walcutt relished the chance to renew his interest in scouting when his son, Paul, joined Troop 5, and throughout the years, they had many outdoor adventures and made important friendships; Mr. Walcutt continued his support of scouting long after his son was grown, and in 2001, he received the Silver Antelope Award, one of the highest honors granted by the Boy Scouts, for his outstanding service to youth in the capital area; and WHEREAS, Mr. Walcutt was a devoted family man who loved to travel; together with his wife and son, he explored the terrain and culture of locales throughout the world; in addition, he took great pleasure in going on regular camping trips with a group of close friends; and WHEREAS, Bruce Walcutt inspired people everywhere with his integrity, enthusiasm, and generosity, and although his passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, his spirit will live on in their hearts forever; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Bruce Derden Walcutt and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Mary; to his son, Paul; to his sisters-in-law, Diane Walcutt and Ana Salas-Porras-King; to his brothers-in-law, Tommy Holt and his wife, Angela, and Joe Holt and his wife, Mary Pat; to his nephews, Matthew Walcutt, Jonathan Holt, and Benjamin Holt; to his nieces, Maria Walcutt, Casey Holt, and Shannon Holt; to his cousins, Irv and Rosalie Cumbie; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bruce Derden Walcutt.
