R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of Stephen Anthony Coffman on May
8, 2006, at the age of 53, the Lone Star State has lost a distinctive
broadcasting talent and an enthusiastic champion of Texas music,
and we join his family and many admirers in mourning their loss; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 9, 1952, in Waco, Steve Coffman was
exposed to a wide range of music from an early age, and his career as
a radio disc jockey began in Jacksonville while he was still a
student at nearby Stephen F. Austin State University; and
WHEREAS, It was at KAFM in Dallas that he first developed his
unique "Texas radio" format, which showcased the infinite variety
of Texas music by juxtaposing such styles as Texas swing,
rockabilly, blues, jazz, and coastal music; and
WHEREAS, He continued to refine and explore the state's rich
musical heritage at stations throughout Texas, and in 1999 he
brought his unique sensibility to KTXN in Victoria, where his
"Coffee with Coffman" morning show remained a programming mainstay
until his passing; and
WHEREAS, His love of his profession was such that he
continued to broadcast even after he became ill, moving and
inspiring his colleagues with his dedication; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Steve Coffman shared his deep
love of music with friends and fans across Texas, and in so doing,
he himself came to be a vital contributor to the state's rich
musical history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Stephen Anthony Coffman and extend sincere sympathy to the members
of his family: to his wife of 24 years, Vicky Zapp Coffman; to his
children, Stephen Anthony Coffman, Jr., and Mary Rose Coffman; to
his brother, John H. Coffman III; to his sisters, Janean Coffman
Carey and Rosanne Coffman Johnson; and to his other relatives and
many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Steve
Coffman.
