R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sidney Williams is being honored by his alma mater, Phillis Wheatley High School, with a 2006 Phillis Wheatley Award on May 20; and WHEREAS, Following his professional football career, Mr. Williams has worked to expand economic opportunities for African Americans and other minorities; a business developer with the Black Economic Union and a project manager for the Los Angeles West Adams Housing Program, where he focused on developing loan agreements for low-income residents, he has also devoted many years to aiding youth organizations as a mentor and public speaker; and WHEREAS, In the 1990s, he served as the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, and today he heads up the Williams Group, a consulting firm, where he provides expertise in fields as diverse as finance, golf course development, and joint-venture opportunities for women and minorities; and WHEREAS, Phillis Wheatley High School counts among its graduates many who have made far-reaching contributions in behalf of their fellow citizens, and through his service, Sidney Williams is joining this notable group; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Sidney Williams on his receipt of a 2006 Phillis Wheatley Award and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Williams as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
