R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, After more than four decades as an educator, Wanda
Smith is retiring as superintendent of Keene Independent School
District in May 2006, and this personal and professional milestone
offers an opportunity to recognize her for her many achievements;
and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska,
Mrs. Smith received her master's degree from Texas Christian
University and did doctoral work at Texas Woman's University; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of her career, she served as a
teacher, counselor, and assistant principal before becoming one of
the first women to serve as superintendent of a Texas school
district, and she has brought to each of these roles her
characteristic intelligence and integrity; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was the first female to serve as
president of the Texas Association of Community Schools; she has
served on the Texas Association of School Administrators executive
committee and on the advisory board of the Texas School Business
magazine, and she was named a Keene Chamber of Commerce Educator of
the Year for 2005; and
WHEREAS, Young people are the Lone Star State's most precious
resource, and those Texans who dedicate themselves to their
education are truly deserving of our profound gratitude and
admiration; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Wanda Smith on the
occasion of her retirement as Keene ISD superintendent and extend
to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
