H.R. No. 801
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Avery Johnson, head coach of the Dallas Mavericks,
has been honored with the Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA Coach of
the Year for the 2005-2006 season; and
WHEREAS, In his first full season at the helm, Coach Johnson
guided Dallas to a 60-22 mark, the third-best record in the league
and tied for the best season in franchise history; the fastest coach
in NBA history to collect 50 wins, Coach Johnson has led the
Mavericks to a remarkable 76-24 regular-season record since taking
over as head coach on March 19, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Retired as a player since October 28, 2004, Coach
Johnson has made a seemingly seamless transition into the rarefied
and supremely challenging fraternity of NBA coaching; this
impressive evolution is not surprising given the high regard in
which the former point guard was held for his on-court leadership
and uncanny knowledge of the game, and he has indeed lived up to the
expectations of his former teammates, coaches, and mentors; and
WHEREAS, Known as the "Little General" during his playing
days, Coach Johnson transformed the Mavericks from an offensive
juggernaut content to simply outscore its opponents to a unit also
focused on defense and shutting down challengers; Dallas ranked in
the top 10 in both scoring and points allowed this season, putting
up 99.1 points per game and limiting opponents to a franchise-low
93.1 points per game; and
WHEREAS, By placing an emphasis on defense while maintaining
many facets of the team's high-powered offense, Coach Johnson
placed his indelible imprint on the 2005-2006 Mavericks,
successfully preparing his team for the unique challenges of
postseason play and a run at the coveted NBA crown; now, therefore,
be it
