R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The fond memories of a most meaningful and |
|
influential life may serve as comfort to the family and friends of |
|
Maria Rivera Alonzo, who passed away April 22, 2006, in Dallas; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native resident of Texas, she was born on October |
|
7, 1930, in Crystal City, the town where she lived for most of her |
|
life; never ashamed or afraid of hard work, she earned money as a |
|
migrant farm laborer, traveling from Texas to several other states |
|
in order to contribute to the well-being of her family; and |
|
WHEREAS, Upon meeting Emeterio M. Alonzo, Jr., Maria found |
|
her mate for life, and the two were blessed by 11 children; these |
|
sons and daughters, who included future state representative |
|
Roberto R. Alonzo, were continually inspired by the example of |
|
their strong, industrious, and loving mother who was the foundation |
|
of the family; and |
|
WHEREAS, Speaking of his mother's influence on himself and |
|
his siblings, Representative Alonzo has said that, "We are who we |
|
are because of her"; Mrs. Alonzo not only stressed the importance of |
|
basic qualities such as honesty and responsibility, but also taught |
|
her children to value civic and political ideals such as equality |
|
and civil rights and to work for the betterment of all; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Alonzo was deeply saddened by the loss of her |
|
husband, Emeterio, in the late 1970s, but she found solace in the |
|
love of her family and the friendship of her many other |
|
acquaintances; she was a frequent and most welcome visitor to the |
|
Capitol, and her warmth, grace, and generosity will be fondly |
|
remembered here, as they will be by everyone who had the pleasure |
|
and good fortune of meeting this most remarkable woman; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
|
Maria Rivera Alonzo and extend deepest sympathy to the members of |
|
her family: to her children, Ramon, Gerardo, Roberto, Victor, |
|
Javier, Ruben, Jose, Maria Luisa, Monica, Diana, and Maria Anna |
|
and |
|
to her 28 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and when the Texas House of Representatives |
|
adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maria Rivera Alonzo. |
