SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Tejanos are native Texans of Mexican descent who
have helped build and shape the State of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Tejano music is a unique, native-Texas art form
whose origin reflects the influence of an indigenous Mestizo
culture born itself from Native American, Spanish, and European
roots; and
WHEREAS, Tejano music evolved through public gatherings and
events that helped foster a strong sense of community within
Mexican American culture in Texas and continues to flourish as an
art form with diverse, yet distinctive, sounds that are different
from other types of Spanish-language music; and
WHEREAS, Tejano music has been played throughout the State of
Texas on ranches, in urban dance halls, and in concert venues and at
social events ranging from traditional agricultural festivals held
during cotton-picking harvests to present-day Mexican American
celebrations such as weddings, quinceañeras, and graduations; and
WHEREAS, Artists such as Beto Villa, Lydia Mendoza, Narciso
Martinez, and the inimitable Jiménez family pioneered this musical
style that paved the way for contemporary legends and Grammy award
winners such as George and Mague, Mingo Saldivar, Selena, Sunny
Ozuna, Little Joe Hernández, David Lee Garza, Joel Guzman, Sunny
Sauceda, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, Laura Canales, and
Johnny Degollado y Su Conjunto; and
WHEREAS, There is a growing concern in the Mexican American
community over the systematic elimination of Tejano music from
Spanish-language radio stations throughout the State of Texas,
resulting in significant unmet demand; and
WHEREAS, Organizations such as the Austin Tejano Music
Coalition are bringing together Hispanic leaders and other
concerned citizens within the Mexican American community to raise
awareness of the ongoing removal of Tejano music from radio
airwaves in Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Mexican American community is urging
Spanish-language radio and television stations to serve the entire
Mexican American community by providing improved access to Tejano
music and artists; and
WHEREAS, Efforts are being made throughout the State of Texas
to re-establish radio outlets for Tejano music; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby recognize the cultural importance of
Tejano music and join the Mexican American community in urging
Spanish-language radio and television stations to serve the entire
community by providing improved access to Tejano music; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby commend efforts being taken by
organizations such as the Austin Tejano Music Coalition to promote
the availability of Tejano music in the State of Texas.
Recognizing the cultural importance of Tejano music and urging
Spanish-language radio and television stations to provide improved
access to Tejano music.
