SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with meaningful
accomplishments and joyful times may comfort the family and friends
of Jack Bob Smith of Onalaska, who passed away October 19, 2005, at
the age of 59; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Polk County, Bobby Smith was
born May 16, 1946, in Houston; after graduating from Livingston
High School, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Stephen F.
Austin State University; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was an esteemed public servant who was
dedicated to the betterment of his beloved community; county
commissioner for nearly two decades, he served on the board of the
Texas Association of Counties and the Deep East Texas Council of
Governments, and through the years he held numerous offices in the
North and East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association
and in the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas; in
2000, he earned advanced certification in county government as part
of the V. G. Young Institute of County Government and was enrolled
in the institute's Commissioners Court Leadership Academy; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Smith shared his time and talents
for almost 30 years as fire chief of the Onalaska Volunteer Fire
Department, which he helped found, and was district chair of the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; he was especially supportive of
local youth, active in the Onalaska Youth Sports Association for
two decades and raising money for the Polk County Area Go Texan
Committee scholarship; and
WHEREAS, Above all, Mr. Smith was a devoted father and
friend, and he enjoyed nothing more than sharing time with the
people who were dear to him; and
WHEREAS, An active and respected member of his community,
Bobby Smith did so much to build a better future for the citizens of
Polk County, and he leaves behind a legacy that will benefit area
residents for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Jack Bob Smith
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
sons, Brett and Brandon Smith; to his grandsons, Lane and Brady
Smith; to his sister, Jeanne Ann Byrd, and her husband, Johnny; and
to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Bobby Smith.
