SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 8
In Memory
of
Arthur Rice
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Austin in mourning the loss of Arthur Rice, who died April 2, 2006,
at the age of 89; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Janesville, Wisconsin, Arthur
was the son of Polish immigrants; for 50 years he lived in Austin,
where he worked for 35 years as an agent for Metropolitan Life
Insurance; and
WHEREAS, Arthur survived the horrors of the infamous
Bataan Death March and the ensuing years of forced labor in a
Japanese prisoner-of-war camp; the experience forever informed
his view of life, yet he remained positive and was an inspiration
to all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, An Orthodox Jew, Arthur served as a lay rabbi while
in the Air Force; he was later a member of the Congregation Agudas
Achim, and he helped found Congregation Beth El; and
WHEREAS, Arthur was a member of the Military Order of the
Purple Heart, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Jewish War Veterans
Post 757, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 856; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion,
Arthur gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and
valued counsel will not be forgotten by his family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Arthur Rice: his loving
wife of 60 years, Minnie Taglicht Rice; his daughters and
sons-in-law, Jennyne and Irvin Bilsky, Maureen and David Yett,
and Marlien Rice; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and
Pam Rice; his sisters, Dixie Mark and Esther Schuster; and his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of profound sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Arthur Rice.
