SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 33
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Grammy award-winning legends of Tejano music Ruben Ramos, Little Joe Hernandez, and Sunny Ozuna, who are performing in Los Grandes de la Música Tejana, a concert celebrating Tejano culture and the 35th anniversary of The University of Texas Center for Mexican American Studies; and WHEREAS, The concert on April 22, 2006, is being presented by the Center for Mexican American Studies in collaboration with the university's Performing Arts Center's ArtesAméricas program; it is the first time Tejano music has ever been performed in a concert setting on The University of Texas at Austin campus; and WHEREAS, Ruben Perez Ramos was born in Sugar Land and now sits at the helm of a family musical legacy that began over 80 years ago; that legacy is set with traditional Mexican roots infused with the big-band sounds of the 1940s and influenced by blues and rock; Ruben and his band, Texas Revolution, were inducted into the Pura Vida Hall of Fame, and Ruben was inducted into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Jose Maria de Leon Hernandez, "Little Joe" to millions of Tejano fans, was born in Temple in 1940; he and his band, Little Joe y La Familia, have cut more than 40 records, including "Timeless," which stayed on the Latin chart of Billboard for more than a year; in addition to his wide range of performances, he crusades for such causes as AIDS education, ecology, and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund; and WHEREAS, Ildefonso Fraga "Sunny" Ozuna has a 50-year history of musical successes that began when he was a high school student in his hometown of San Antonio; a versatile artist, he performs in both English and Spanish; he was the first Tejano artist to appear on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and he has produced and recorded more than 85 successful compact discs; and WHEREAS, Ruben Ramos, Little Joe Hernandez, and Sunny Ozuna have been an integral part of the expansion of Tejano music; in their concert, they will be accompanied by an all-star orchestra, which will include members of La Familia and Revolution bands; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the Center for Mexican American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin for presenting Los Grandes de la Música Tejana and pay tribute to Ruben Ramos, Little Joe Hernandez, and Sunny Ozuna for their outstanding contributions to Tejano music; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
