SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 58
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
recognize May, 2006, as Elder Abuse Prevention Month; and
WHEREAS, Elderly citizens have contributed greatly to the
general welfare of this state by helping to preserve its customs,
principles, and heritage; they are valued members of our society
who enrich our lives with their wisdom and experience; and
WHEREAS, Abuse, neglect, and exploitation of the elderly
and of people with disabilities in domestic and institutional
settings is a widespread problem that affects hundreds of
thousands of people across the country; and
WHEREAS, This problem affected over 46,000 Texans in 2005;
it involves both men and women, people of all cultural and ethnic
groups, and people of all income levels, and it is often
underreported due to the shame and fear of those abused; and
WHEREAS, Many cases investigated by the Texas Department
of Family and Protective Services involve self-neglect; it is the
duty of all citizens to reach out to people in need, regardless of
their situation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby call upon the
citizens of Texas to work together to fight the problem of abuse
of the elderly and the disabled and urge all communities to
observe May, 2006, as Elder Abuse Prevention Month; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
recognition of Elder Abuse Prevention Month.
