SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 74
In Memory
of
Jose Alfredo Velez
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
commemorates the life of Corporal Jose Alfredo Velez, of the
United States Army, who died November 13, 2004, at the age of 23,
while serving his country in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, Jose Velez was born in Lubbock on October 21, 1981;
he graduated with honors from Estacado High School, where he was
active in football, track, wrestling, and power lifting; he
received training as an emergency medical technician and was
certified by the City of Lubbock as a lifeguard; and
WHEREAS, When Jose joined the army in August, 2000, he
embarked on a journey that took him from saving lives on a small
scale for the City of Lubbock to that of saving lives on a much
larger scale in the United States Army; he was assigned to Alpha
Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat
Team, 1st Cavalry Division; and
WHEREAS, Jose was killed in action in Fallujah; he had
received the Combat Infantry Badge, one of the most prestigious
honors awarded an infantryman for ground combat, in May of 2004,
and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the
Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Velez was an honorable and courageous
patriot who died fighting on behalf of his country; for his
service and his sacrifice, this state and this nation are
eternally grateful; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, son, brother, and
grandson, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the
life of Jose Alfredo Velez and extend sincere condolences to his
bereaved family: his wife, Nickie; his parents, Roy and Carmen Velez
and Willie and Rosie Janssen; his brothers, Private First Class
Andrew Velez, Drill Sergeant Jose Ancira, Jr., Eric Janssen, and
Raymond Janssen; his sisters, Monica Velez, Melissa Ancira,
Kristy Perez, Priscilla Inguanza, and Lorin Janssen; and his
grandparents, Rogelio and Ruby Velez and Celia Robles; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Jose Alfredo Velez.
