SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 81
In Memory
of
Michael Bernard Wright
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Austin in mourning the loss of Michael Bernard Wright, who died
February 13, 2006, at the age of 67; and
WHEREAS, Mike was born January 10, 1939, in Laredo, where
he attended Martin High School; he earned a bachelor's degree in
civil engineering from Texas A&M University, and he was a member
of the Corps of Cadets; and
WHEREAS, After his graduation, Mike was commissioned as a
second lieutenant in the United States Air Force, where he served
as an astronomical surveyor; and
WHEREAS, Mike moved with his family to Austin in 1969 and
began work with Forrest & Cotton, Engineers; while with that
firm, he helped supervise construction of the Pan American
Highway in La Paz, Bolivia; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Mike joined another Texas A&M University
graduate, Roberto O. Martinez, and formed Martinez and Wright
Engineers, Incorporated; he was active in the American Society of
Civil Engineers and served as president of its Austin branch; he
retired in 2000; and
WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Mike was an active member of
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and he earned a master's degree in
theology from Saint Mary's University in 2005; he was ordained as
a deacon for the Diocese of Austin and was assigned to Sacred
Heart Catholic Church, and he served as a volunteer with the
Saint Vincent de Paul Society for 36 years; and
WHEREAS, Mike enriched all who knew him with his love and
compassion, his warmth and kindness, and his enthusiasm and
vitality; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mike
leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his
family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Michael Bernard Wright:
his beloved wife of 42 years, Frances A. Wright; his daughters,
Susan Sosa, Stephanie Cavender, Denise Martinez, and
Jean Violetto; his twin brother, Patrick L. Wright; his brother,
Edward V. Wright; his sister, Mary Paul Cowdrey; and his
10 grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of profound sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Michael Bernard Wright.
