SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 84
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Terrell Independent School District Head
Start program for its 40 years of outstanding service to the
schoolchildren of Terrell; and
WHEREAS, A national program initially drawn up by a panel
of child development experts, Head Start is a nonprofit federally
funded program that seeks to help communities meet the needs of
disadvantaged preschool children; and
WHEREAS, The Terrell Head Start program began in 1965 as a
six-week summer school program with two teachers and fewer than
40 students; in 1970, it became a part of the Terrell Independent
School District through a federal grant, and the program began
providing full-day services; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the program continued to grow, and
it now serves 149 children and their families annually; over
3,500 children have been helped by the program during its 40 years
of service; and
WHEREAS, The Terrell Independent School District Head
Start program is hosting a gala celebration on May 5, 2006, at
Herman Furlough Middle School to pay tribute to the principals,
teachers, school board members, staff, and volunteers who have
made the Terrell Head Start program such a resounding success;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the Terrell
Independent School District Head Start program for the years of
help and support it has provided the children and families of
Terrell and extend best wishes to all for an outstanding gala
celebration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the district in honor of this occasion.
