SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 113
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Prairie View A&M University on the grand occasion of its 130th anniversary; and WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M University was established by the Texas Legislature as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youths on August 14, 1876; responsibility for its management was placed with the board of directors for the Agricultural and Mechanical College in Bryan; the college opened in Prairie View on March 11, 1878; and WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M University has established itself as an outstanding institution of higher education that is committed to preparing students of any race, color, or creed in a wide range of careers; the university is a part of The Texas A&M University System; and WHEREAS, During its 130-year history, the university has awarded well over 45,000 academic degrees, and over the past five years, it has awarded some 6,000 degrees, including over 2,400 graduate degrees, to students who came from across the United States and many foreign countries; its enrollment now exceeds 6,000, with more than 2,000 graduate students; and WHEREAS, Graduates of the university have made significant contributions to the United States military and the performing arts; some 1,800 commissioned officers, including nine flag officers, have come from Prairie View, as has singer and pianist Charles Mose Brown, a 1942 graduate; these achievements were highlighted at an anniversary gala held on April 29, 2006, to celebrate the university's illustrious history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to Prairie View A&M University for its many contributions to the educational system of this state and this nation and congratulate the alumni, students, faculty, staff, and administrators on the university's 130th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
