SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
WHEREAS, Many proud citizens of Neches are gathering on
May 6, 2006, to celebrate their town's rich history at the 14th
annual Neches Heritage Day; and
WHEREAS, This East Texas community was founded in 1872 when
the International-Great Northern Railroad, now Union Pacific
Railroad, was built through the area and local property owners
Murdock McDonald and J. J. Davis donated land for a train station
and a townsite; a post office with the name Nechesville and a
school were opened soon thereafter, and by 1884, the community
had a Masonic lodge, three mills, two general stores, and two
saloons; the town's name was shortened to Neches in 1892; and
WHEREAS, This year's Neches Heritage Day features a parade,
led by grand marshal Clydelle Klein, musical entertainment, and
an assortment of local foods and arts and crafts; moreover,
residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to
experience the town's storied past by touring such historic
structures as the McDonald Store and Museum and Neches Methodist
Church; and
WHEREAS, Although small in size, the community of Neches
boasts immense character and warmth, and this year's Neches
Heritage Day will offer attendees a welcome occasion to delight
in this historic town's unique charm; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize May 6, 2006,
as Neches Heritage Day and extend to the organizers and attendees
of the celebration best wishes for a successful event.
