SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 
recognizing the citizens of Live Oak County on the grand occasion 
of the county's 150th anniversary; and
	WHEREAS, Live Oak County was created by an act of the
Texas Legislature on February 2, 1856, as a result of a request 
from the settlers in northern San Patricio County; the county 
seat, George West, is located near the center of the county; and
	WHEREAS, The commissioners appointed by the legislature to 
organize the county met under the boughs of a spreading live oak 
tree in the Gussettville settlement, a short distance up the 
Nueces River from the Shannon crossing; and
	WHEREAS, The commissioners decided upon Live Oak as the 
name of the new county, and the tree, located near Farm-to-Market 
Road 799, was later designated Charter Oak and was the site for 
picnics, horse races, and school programs for area residents; and
	WHEREAS, A countywide sesquicentennial celebration is 
being held May 6, 2006, and will include a cowboy breakfast, the 
dedication of a marker showing the path of the Great West Trail,
a trail ride, a historical reenactment of the signing of the 
charter under the Charter Oak tree, and a ranch rodeo; and
	WHEREAS, The residents of Live Oak County can be justifiably
proud of their county's rich past and its contributions to the 
heritage of the State of Texas, and it is fitting the county be 
given recognition at this time as an excellent area in which to 
live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to
Live Oak County on the 150th anniversary of its founding and 
extend best wishes to its citizens for a splendid celebration; 
and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in 
honor of this occasion.
