SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 128
In Memory
of
Rudy Casarez Ortiz
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Rudy Casarez Ortiz, who
died April 14, 2006, at the age of 62; and
WHEREAS, Rudy Ortiz was born in Beeville and moved to
San Antonio as a child; he graduated from Holy Cross High School
and served in the United States Army for two years; he earned a
bachelor's degree in English from The University of Texas at Austin
in 1970 and a master's degree in social work from Our Lady of the
Lake University in 1975; and
WHEREAS, For most of his 30-year career with the Alamo
Community College District, he served as a counselor at
San Antonio College, where he was noted for founding the
Cyberspace Poetry Society as an outlet for poetry for faculty
and staff; he also served as a counselor and an associate
professor at Saint Philips College; and
WHEREAS, In 1977, Rudy was part of the first group of
ethnic minority city council candidates elected from
single-member districts; he left the council after one term,
but he continued to be involved in many community activities,
such as voter registration drives; and
WHEREAS, A councilman, counselor, mentor, civil rights
activist, and poet, Rudy Ortiz was well known for his
dependability and his compassion for others, and his wisdom,
warmth, and valued counsel will long be remembered by all who
knew him; and
WHEREAS, Rudy was a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Rudy Casarez Ortiz: his
wife of 39 years, Margarita Petra Ortiz; his daughters,
Michelle Zuñiga and Elizabeth Ortiz; his son, Eric Ortiz; his
father, George Moya Ortiz; his brothers, Manuel, George, and
Joe Ortiz; and his three grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
do so in memory of Rudy Ortiz.
