SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 129
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Herbert H. Richardson on the occasion of his retirement as director of the Texas Transportation Institute and as associate vice chancellor for Engineering in The Texas A&M University System; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Colby College in Maine, Dr. Richardson earned his doctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he later served as a professor and as associate dean of the College of Engineering; he served as the first chief scientist of the United States Department of Transportation in the early 1970s; and WHEREAS, Dr. Richardson joined The Texas A&M University System in 1984 as vice chancellor for Engineering, dean of Engineering, and distinguished professor of Engineering; from 1991 until 1993, Dr. Richardson served as chancellor of The Texas A&M University System; and WHEREAS, In 1993, Dr. Richardson accepted the directorship of the Texas Transportation Institute, the largest university-affiliated transportation research organization in the country; and WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the institute has expanded its mission to include all modes of transportation, has grown to include nine national research centers, and has become a valued resource on transportation issues for Texas; and WHEREAS, For his exceptional achievements, Dr. Richardson has received numerous honors; he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was awarded the Rufus Oldenberger Medal and the Benjamin Garver Lamme Medal; and WHEREAS, Dr. Richardson has contributed greatly to Texas A&M University and the State of Texas through his expertise and professionalism, and his stewardship of the Texas Transportation Institute is truly deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Herbert H. Richardson on his many accomplishments and his outstanding leadership as director of the Texas Transportation Institute and as associate vice chancellor for Engineering for The Texas A&M University System; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
