SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 145
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Louie White for his many years of service to the
City of Austin as a police officer; and
WHEREAS, Louie White was the first African American to be
awarded the Austin Police Department's medal of valor; he served
as an officer for nearly 30 years, retiring as a captain; and
WHEREAS, He won the medal of valor for defusing a volatile
hostage situation in 1972; he received his medal a year later
but without the traditional ceremony and only after his fellow
officers detailed his heroism in a letter; and
WHEREAS, Mr. White served the department in many ways
throughout the years; he recruited many African American
officers to the police department and helped found the Texas
Peace Officers Association; and
WHEREAS, Recently, the Austin Police Department and the
City of Austin paid tribute to Mr. White in the city council
chambers, acknowledging his courageous actions with a laudatory
ceremony; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage and quiet dignity, Louie White
served the citizens of Austin with valor and dedication, and he
is truly deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Louie White
for his years of outstanding service to the Austin Police Department;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
