SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 200
In Memory
of
Patrick Hughes Keefe, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of
Victoria in mourning the loss of Patrick Hughes Keefe, Jr., who
died March 22, 2006, at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, Born December 8, 1925, in Victoria, Pat graduated
from Patti Welder High School; he then entered Texas A&M University,
but like many of his generation, he put his education on hold while
he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II;
and
WHEREAS, After the war, Pat returned to Texas A&M University,
where he earned a degree in civil engineering and became a fervent
supporter of the Aggies, a passion that remained with him
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, Pat began a career with the Texas Highway
Department in Victoria after college; he retired from the
department in 1977 as Senior Resident Engineer for the Victoria
District; and
WHEREAS, Pat was a member of a pioneer Victoria family, and
he drew on that perspective in his civic activities; he was a
member of Victoria Preservation, Incorporated, and he was the
caretaker of the "Bishop Odin fig tree," a descendant of a tree
brought from France by the priest who later became the first
Catholic bishop of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Pat was a member of the Victoria Planning
Commission, serving as its chairman for many years; he was also a
member of American Legion Post 166 and a life member of the
American Society of Civil Engineers; and
WHEREAS, Pat was devoted to his extended family; he hosted
and cooked for many Keefe family reunions and was known for his
annual family Christmas cookie baking festival; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, Pat
gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
counsel will not be forgotten by his family and many friends;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Patrick Hughes Keefe, Jr.;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Patrick Hughes Keefe, Jr.
