SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 209
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the JPS Health Network as it celebrates 100 years of
dedication to charity care in Tarrant County; and
WHEREAS, In 1906 the Fort Worth Medical College set aside
10 beds for the less fortunate; within eight years, the public
City-County Hospital opened its doors; as Tarrant County grew, so
did the hospital's role in caring for the increasing population;
and
WHEREAS, By 1939, with a grant from the Public Works
Administration, the hospital had expanded to a new 166-bed
facility on land donated in 1877 by John Peter Smith, a pioneer
civic leader and former Fort Worth mayor; the City-County
Hospital was renamed John Peter Smith Hospital in 1954; and
WHEREAS, Voters approved the Tarrant County Hospital
District in 1959, allowing county officials to collect property
taxes as a dedicated source of revenue for the hospital; and
WHEREAS, The JPS Health Network is now a taxpayer-supported
county hospital district with an annual budget of $428 million;
the network includes a teaching hospital, a new hospital in south
Arlington, an AIDS clinic, and a women's center; and
WHEREAS, As the JPS Health Network embarks on its next
century, it has begun an $89.5 million hospital expansion project
that includes a five-story tower that will add 108 beds and
emergency and operating rooms; and
WHEREAS, The JPS Network has played an important role in
the development of Tarrant County, and it is prepared to take on
the challenges of its second 100 years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the
JPS Health Network for its exemplary role in providing quality
health care in Tarrant County and extend best wishes for
continued success in the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
