SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 218
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the First Baptist Church of Del Rio on the grand
occasion of its 110th anniversary, which is being celebrated
May 21, 2006, and on the dedication and unveiling of its Official
Texas Historical Marker; and
WHEREAS, The First Baptist Church of Del Rio was founded on
May 24, 1896, by Pastor Frank Marrs from the Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary of Kentucky and the Reverend and
Mrs. Edwin Stucker, who were missionaries serving families from a
railway car; the church was formally organized with six charter
members; and
WHEREAS, Land was donated to the church, and members moved
the church services to an adobe building on the southwest corner
of Garfield and Pecan Streets; the church continued to grow with
the city, and on February 17, 1925, the members of the
congregation laid the cornerstone of a brick and stone structure
to replace the adobe building; and
WHEREAS, The sanctuary remained home to the First Baptist
congregation for 35 years, until the congregation again needed
more space; in 1960, a new structure was built outside the
downtown area on Avenue G, and the cornerstone from the former
sanctuary was incorporated; and
WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its
previous pastors and to the outstanding leadership of its current
pastor, Ben D. Craver, the First Baptist Church of Del Rio has
continued to grow and to play a vital role in the life of the
community; and
WHEREAS, Although a fire destroyed early church records,
the First Baptist Church of Del Rio has maintained a strong sense
of its history and remains true to the vision of service set forth
by its founders; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend best wishes
to the clergy and members of the First Baptist Church of Del Rio
on the occasion of its 110th anniversary and extend best wishes
to all attending the celebration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the church as a memento of this occasion.
