SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 220
WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks 50 years since George N. Bowers
was first elected mayor of Tenaha, and this momentous milestone
provides a fitting opportunity to recognize his many
accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Born in nearby Center, Mayor Bowers graduated
from Center High School in 1945 and then served his country in the
Korean War, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star and the Combat
Infantry Badge; on his return to Shelby County, he served for six
years on the Tenaha City Council, before being elected mayor in
1956 at the age of 27; and
WHEREAS, Since entering office, this esteemed Texan has
dedicated his life to supporting and improving his adopted home;
among his many accomplishments are maintaining a local clinic,
upgrading the water and sewer systems, expanding the fire and
police departments, and improving roads; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Bowers also shares his time and talent with
various organizations, including the Lions Club, Tenaha
Businessmen's Club, Citizens State Bank, and Shelby County
Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, In all his many endeavors, he enjoys the love and
support of his wife, Laura, and their two children, five
grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mayor George Bowers is known for his optimism,
passion, and genuine concern for Tenaha, and it is a pleasure to
honor his half-century of remarkable mayoral service; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend
Mayor George N. Bowers on his 50 years of service to Tenaha and
extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for Mayor Bowers as an expression of high regard from
the Texas Senate.
