SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 242
In Memory
of
Bruce D. Walcutt
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Bruce D. Walcutt, who died May 6, 2006, at the age of 58; and WHEREAS, Born September 26, 1947, on a farm outside Grapevine, Bruce grew up in Austin, attending Eanes School when it was a four-room rock schoolhouse with only 76 students; and WHEREAS, Bruce earned a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at El Paso; after serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, he returned to Austin and entered the restaurant business; he cofounded Pelican's Wharf in 1972, and in 1975 opened the County Line Restaurant; and WHEREAS, Through the years, the County Line Restaurant became a chain of 13 locations in 10 cities, yet Bruce continued to be involved in the daily operation of the business; he created a place where employees became like family members and where many of them stayed and worked for many years; and WHEREAS, Bruce treasured Austin and played an active part in its civic life; in addition to his leadership role in the hospitality and restaurant industry, he was very active in the Scouting movement; he served as president of the Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America, and he received the Silver Antelope Award, one of Scouting's highest honors; and WHEREAS, Bruce devoted his time and energy to a wide array of other civic interests as well; he served as president of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Westlake Community Library, and the Headliners Club, and he served on the boards of Big Brothers-Big Sisters, the Austin Heritage Society, Ballet Austin, and others; and WHEREAS, A man of strength, generosity, and boundless good cheer, Bruce gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Bruce leaves behind memories that will be cherished by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Bruce D. Walcutt: his wife, Mary; and his son, Paul; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of profound sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bruce D. Walcutt.
