SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 263
In Memory
of
Carmen Anaya
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Pharr and Las Milpas in mourning the loss of Carmen Anaya, who
died on May 12, 2006, at the age of 79; and
WHEREAS, Carmen Anaya was a longtime community activist,
who helped found and build Valley Interfaith; this church-based
organization has been instrumental in improving the quality of
life for residents of the colonias; and
WHEREAS, Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Carmen moved to the
United States as a teenager; she and her husband, José, worked
as migrant workers for almost 20 years; the couple became the
proprietors of the Anaya general store on Cage Boulevard,
running the business for more than 30 years; as a storekeeper,
Mrs. Anaya learned about many of the community's problems from
her customers, such as the lack of sewers and running water in
the colonias; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1980s the bishop of the Brownsville
Diocese, John J. Fitzpatrick, asked her and several other
community leaders to launch Valley Interfaith; Carmen Anaya was
also instrumental in helping acquire federal grants for sewer
lines outside the city limits; and
WHEREAS, Carmen Anaya was a devoted wife, mother, and
grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that will be
treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Carmen Anaya: her husband,
José Anaya; her daughters, Diana, Minerva, Consuelo, and Linda;
her sons, José Anaya, Jr., and Eduardo Anaya; her sisters,
Elena Salazar, Elvia Oviedo, and Manuela Chaires; her brother,
Guadalupe Rodríguez; and her eight grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of esteem from the
Texas Senate.
