                                                                                                       Committee Report (Unamended)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The "Hazelwood Act" allowed for tuition and fee exemptions for certain military personnel and certain children of those personnel who served in various wars from the Spanish-American War through the Persian Gulf War.  Current law, however, does not mention service members who are now serving as a result of the War on Terror.

HB 503 will update this act to include those who have served in the military as a result of September 11, 2001.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

This bill adds members of the military who served as a result of terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to be eligible to receive tuition exemption as stated by Chapter 54 Education Code, the "Hazelwood Act."

EFFECTIVE DATE

This act shall be effective immediately if it receives the necessary vote, otherwise it will take effect September 1, 2005.
