                                                                                                       Committee Report (Unamended)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Bell County has not added a new district court since the 1970s, and since then has added 100,000 residents.  With an increasing number of civil and felony criminal cases, greater efficiency is needed to move people through the system. This bill would add a fifth district court to the four that already exist in Bell County to handle the increased population and case load.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

The bill amends Subchapter C of Chapter 24 of the Government Code by creating the 426th Judicial District, composed of Bell County. The terms of the 426th District Court begin on the first Mondays in January, April, July and October. the 27th, 146th, 169th, 264th and 426th judicial districts have concurrent jurisdiction in Bell County. The new district court is created on the effective date of this bill.
