BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Current state law does not permit military officers to serve on the school boards of military reservation school districts, which is inconsistent with federal policy.

Senate Bill 144 amends the Texas Education Code to authorize the State Board of Education to appoint military officers to the board of trustees of a military reservation school district.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

This bill allows military officers to be appointed to school boards for military reservation school districts.

EFFECTIVE DATE

This Act takes effect immediately if it receives the necessary vote, otherwise it takes effect September 1, 2005.
