AUTHOR'S/SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT
Willie Nelson played a pivotal role in putting Austin's music scene on the national map. He has consistently and publicly worked on behalf of people in need throughout his career. Mr. Nelson is an entertainer of international renown and a genuine Texas legend. Naming part of State Highway 130 after Mr. Nelson will honor him in an enduring way.
As proposed, S.B. 802 designates State Highway 130, between the intersection of Interstate Highway 35 and State Highway 195 in Williamson County and the intersection of United States 183 and State Highway 45 Southeast in Travis County as the Willie Nelson Turnpike. This 49-mile stretch of State Highway 130, which is part of the Central Texas turnpike project, is currently under construction and is projected to open in 2007.
RULEMAKING AUTHORITY
SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS
SECTION 1. Amends Subchapter B, Chapter 225, Transportation Code, by adding Section 225.059, as follows:
Sec. 225.059. WILLIE NELSON TURNPIKE. (a) Provides that State Highway 130 between Interstate Highway 35 at State Highway 195 and United States Highway 183 at State Highway 45 Southeast is designated as the Willie Nelson Turnpike.
(b) Requires the Texas Department of Transportation (department) to design and construct markers indicating the highway number, the designation as the Willie Nelson Turnpike, and any other appropriate information.
(c) Requires the department to erect a marker at each end of the turnpike and at appropriate intermediate sites along the turnpike.
SECTION 2. Effective date: upon passage or September 1, 2005.
