A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to designating August 26 as Women's Independence Day.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is
amended by adding Section 662.051 to read as follows:
Sec. 662.051. WOMEN'S INDEPENDENCE DAY. (a) August 26 is
Women's Independence Day to commemorate the ratification in 1920 of
the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which
guaranteed women the right to vote.
(b) Women's Independence Day shall be regularly observed by
appropriate programs in the public schools and other places to
inspire a greater appreciation of the importance of women's
suffrage.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
