A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to designating May 5 as Tejano Heritage Day.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is
amended by adding Section 662.051 to read as follows:
Sec. 662.051. TEJANO HERITAGE DAY. (a) May 5, also known
as "Cinco de Mayo," is Tejano Heritage Day to commemorate the
history of Tejanos and the contributions Tejanos have made to the
State of Texas and the world.
(b) Tejano Heritage Day shall be regularly observed, in
concert with other notable historical celebrations, by appropriate
programs and activities in the public schools and other places to
inspire greater appreciation of the history of Tejanos and the
important contributions Tejanos have made to the State of Texas and
the world.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
