A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to an exemption from the requirement of compulsory attendance at public school for certain high-performing students. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 25, Education Code, is amended by adding Section 25.0861 to read as follows: Sec. 25.0861. FOUR-DAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE PERMITTED FOR CERTAIN STUDENTS. (a) A student in a class who performs at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others in the same class may be exempt from attending that class on the last school day that the class meets each week. (b) Using criteria established by the State Board of Education, each school district shall adopt a uniform standard for determining whether a student qualifies for an exemption under Subsection (a). SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2005-2006 school year. SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
