A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to eligibility to serve as a school district trustee.                
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1.   Section 11.061(b), Education Code, is amended 
to read as follows:
	(b)  A person may not be elected trustee of an independent 
school district unless the person:
		(1)  is a qualified voter; and                                  
		(2)  holds a high school diploma, certificate of 
coursework completion, or general equivalency certificate.
	SECTION 2.   Section 11.061(b), Education Code, as amended 
by this Act, applies only to the eligibility of a person to serve as 
a trustee of an independent school district for a term that begins 
on or after September 1, 2005.
	SECTION 3.   This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
