A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the length of a ballot proposition. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Section 52.072, Election Code, is amended by adding Subsection (e) to read as follows: (e) A proposition must state the principal purpose of the measure and may not contain more than 75 words. A proposition heading may not contain more than 15 words. The limits imposed by this subsection do not apply to the translation of a proposition or proposition heading into a language other than English. SECTION 2. Section 274.001(b), Election Code, is amended to read as follows: (b) The proposition prescribed by the secretary of state must describe the proposed amendment in terms that clearly express its scope and character and may not contain more than 75 words. The limit imposed by this subsection does not apply to the translation of a proposition into a language other than English. SECTION 3. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to an election ordered on or after September 1, 2005. SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
