A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to a study of the expenses of health care for certain
elderly inmates.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. INMATE HEALTH CARE STUDY. (a) The Texas
Department of Criminal Justice and the Correctional Managed Health
Care Committee shall conduct a study of the cost to the state of
providing health care services to inmates 55 years of age or older
who have serious medical conditions. The study shall:
(1) determine the number of inmates confined by the
department who are 55 years of age or older and who have serious
medical conditions; and
(2) estimate the potential amount of savings that
would result to the state in health care services costs if the
department were to release those inmates into the community on
parole.
(b) Not later than December 1, 2006, the department shall
submit a report to the legislature regarding the results of the
study conducted under this section.
SECTION 2. EXPIRATION. This Act expires January 1, 2007.
SECTION 3. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September
1, 2005.
