A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to requiring continuing education for teachers in the  
detection of child abuse and neglect.
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1. Section 21.054, Education Code, is amended by 
adding Subsection (c) to read as follows:
	(c)  As part of the requirements for certification renewal, 
the board shall require that teachers complete at least one hour of 
training in the detection of child abuse and neglect. The training 
may be provided by videotape or distance learning.
	SECTION 2.  Section 21.054(c), Education Code, as added by 
this Act, applies to the renewal of an educator certificate under 
Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, on or after September 1, 
2005.
	SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
